Which horses died in the Grand National 2022?

This year’s Grand National event saw a handful of horses die after races.

This year’s festival has resulted in the deaths of three horses. After suffering an “untreatable” pelvic injury, Discorama was confirmed to have died in the main Grand National event.

On Saturday, April 9 at Aintree, there were also heartbreaking scenes when Elle Est Belle, who finished fourth in the novices hurdle, suffered a suspected heart attack only hours before the major event.

Following the 1.45 pm race on Friday, April 8, Solwara One, ridden by rider Sam Twiston-Davies, became the first casualty of this year’s racing week.

The RSCPA has criticised the deaths, noting that “any horse death is always one too many,” and animal rights activists and campaign groups have long urged stricter safety measures in horse racing.

Since the first Grand National in 1839, 86 horses have died while competing in the race, with nearly half of those deaths occurring between 2000 and 2012.

Last year, two years after Up for Review died at Aintree, The Long Mile had to be retired during the main race after suffering an injury while running on the flat course.
