Robert’s body was discovered in the ocean on Nov. 5, 1991, and he was pronounced dead. According to an autopsy, the media mogul had a “graze” on his left shoulder, and three pathologists couldn’t agree on the cause of death. Maxwell’s official cause of death was determined to be a heart attack and accidental drowning by an inquest in December 1991.

According to the Guardian, news of Robert’s death onboard his £15 million yachts triggered a flurry of conspiracy theories, with some claiming he was murdered or committed suicide. Maxwell’s reputation was tainted among colleagues who formerly revered him after it was revealed that he had withdrawn up to £460 million from his firms’ pension plans.

After Maxwell’s death, an Arabian businessman bought the yacht, which he sold in 2017 to Anna Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch’s former wife. The new owner didn’t find out until after the sale that the yacht had previously belonged to Maxwell.
