Chalino Sanchez Death: What happened to Chalino?

Chalino played at the Salon Bugambilias in Culiacán on May 15, 1992, four months after the Coachella event where he was attacked. Someone in the audience delivered Chalino a note before he was ready to sing “Alma Enamorada.”

Chalino crushed the note after reading it and began singing the song. The note is thought to be a death threat.

Chalino drove away from the club after midnight with two of his brothers, a cousin, and a group of young women. A gang of armed men in black Chevrolet Suburbans pulled them over. They provided Chalino with state police identification cards and informed him that their commandant wanted to meet with him.

Chalino agreed and climbed into one of their vehicles, while the rest of the group trailed behind.

Two farmers discovered Chalino’s body beside an irrigation canal near Highway 15 near the Los Laureles area in Culiacán at about 6 a.m. on May 16, 1992. He was blindfolded and had rope marks on his wrists. He’d been shot twice in the back of the head.
