Will Smith may have believed that by the time the Oscars ended on Sunday night, the consequences of his slap had been nipped in the bud.
He received a standing ovation for his teary best actor acceptance speech, in which he apologised to the Academy and his fellow candidates and attempted to cast himself as a “defender of his family.”
However, when he woke the next morning, the storm hadn’t passed. It only intensified as people took stock of his violent behaviour in the cold light of day.

Smith resigned from the academy last week, calling his actions “shocking, terrible, and unacceptable,” and adding, “I understand and appreciate the academy’s decision,” on Friday.
After assaulting Chris Rock during the ceremony last month, Will Smith was also banned from attending the Academy Awards for the next decade.
In a letter to members on Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences termed Smith’s behaviour “inappropriate,” and stated the newly minted Academy Award winner would be banned from attending any events or programmes offered by the organisation for the next ten years.
