The Master’s Champions Dinner is a long-standing tradition that was started by golf legend Ben Hogan in 1952.

Hogan suggested that the previous winners of the event gather for a stag dinner along with Augusta National Golf Club president, Bobby Jones and Chairman Clifford Roberts. The dinner began with 11 attendees but has since grown to include a much large and more diverse bunch of champions.
That now includes Matsuyama, who became the first Japanese golfer to win the Masters with his victory in 2021.

Who pays for the master champions dinner?
According to Golf Today, the outgoing champion pays for the dinner. Hence, Matsuyama will be fronting the bill for this year’s dinner. He should be able to afford it easily after taking home $2.07 million from Masters last year.
