Kevin De Bruyne has explained how being rejected by a foster home when he was a teenager inspired him to pursue a career in football.

He was placed with a foster family for a year while completing his education and playing in the Belgian club’s academy.

“That year went by, and I was doing well in school, doing well in football,” he told the Players’ Tribune. There will be no brawls. There are no issues.

“After the year, I packed my belongings and bid my foster family farewell.”

“‘We’ll see you after the break,’ they said. ‘Enjoy your summer.’

“However, when I returned home to my parents’ house, I came in the door and saw my mother crying.”

“I assumed someone had died or something.” ‘What’s the issue?’ I asked.

“And it was then that my mother said the words that would most likely shape the rest of my life.

‘They don’t want you to come back,’ she replied. ‘Your foster family no longer wants you there.’ De Bruyne claimed that it was at that very time that he vowed to prove everyone wrong and reach the top.
