Shue was a National Basketball Association (NBA) player and coach from the United States (NBA).

Shue was a standout guard in the early days of the NBA and a pivotal element in the game’s evolution.

He is credited with developing the “Spin Move,” as well as foreshadowing numerous plays and concepts. Shue was an NBA All-Star five years in a row (1958–62).

After a stellar playing career, he went on to become a long-serving coach, winning NBA Coach of the Year twice. Shue was a “expert at taking over floundering teams” during his career as a player, coach, and executive.

In 1986, LA Times remarked, “Gene Shue has lost more games than any coach in NBA history, which is more of a testimony of Shue’s coaching ability than a criticism. Anybody who can lose 768 games—he has won 757—and still be employed must be a good coach.”
