How many died on the Arizona at Pearl Harbor?

The Arizona returned to its base at Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941. The following morning, around 7:55 a.m., Japan launched a surprise attack on the naval base.

Over 350 Japanese aircraft, including torpedo planes, bombers, and fighters, dropped bombs on US ships for nearly two hours. A 1,760-pound (800-kg) projectile struck Arizona at approximately 8:10 a.m.

The impact ignited munitions and fuels, resulting in a massive explosion that allegedly lifted the battleship out of the water. More bombs were dropped on the ship as it sank. Furthermore, some claimed that Arizona was also hit by torpedoes, but no evidence was found to back up that claim.

The death toll in Arizona was 1,177, even though 334 crew members survived some sources say 355 people died.

The Arizona was one of four battleships to sink during the attack, and Oklahoma capsized as well. Several other ships were damaged, and approximately 2,400 people were killed.

The attack brought the American people together and effectively ended most support for the United States neutrality in the war. The United States declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941, effectively entering World War II.
