Williams wrote: “It’s with a heavy heart I have decided to resign from Nine. Leaving the best team in News is difficult and being part of that team is an honor.

“But I have struggled for years with increasingly poor health and I want to address that now for the sake of a more important team, my family. I want to thank Wickie for making this process possible.

“He has kindly offered me a goodbye lunch so I can pay tribute to those who helped me along the way over 15 years total.”

Williams also held roles at Seven Network in 1988 at Seven News, Sportsworld, Barcelona Olympics and in 1996 was the face of FOX Sports for five years anchoring NRL on FOX, Dally M Awards, Super 12 Rugby, Wimbledon, Winter Olympics, the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, and FOX Sports News.

James Bracey will move to a weeknight sports anchor role with Emma Lawrence on weekend bulletins.
