John Purvis was a Conservative MEP for Mid Scotland and Fife (1979-1984) and from 1999 to 2009, was one of Scotland’s seven MEPs.

John Purvis served as a second lieutenant in the Scots Guards (1956-1958) and graduated MA (Hons) from the University of St Andrews (1962).
John Purvis worked for First National City Bank in London, New York and Milan (1962-1969) and was Treasurer of merchant bank Noble Grossart Ltd in Edinburgh (1969-1973).
John Purvis was Managing Director and Chairman of Gilmerton Management Services Ltd St Andrews (1973-1986) and Chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party (1986-1997).
John Purvis received the CBE in 1990.

During his 15 years as an MEP, John Purvis produced a number of major reports which helped to shape EU policy – notably on biotechnology (supporting GM foods), telecommunications and financial regulation.
John Purvis was also Chairman of Belgrave Capital Management in London, and was for many years a Director of Kingdom FM Radio Ltd., Fife, and Advisor to the Board of Elmwood College in Cupar (2012).

John Purvis died following a battle with cancer in March 2022.
