Pastor Brian Houston was not fired, he resigned.

Hillsong founder Brian Houston announced his resignation as the church’s leader as he defends criminal allegations alleging he covered up his father’s child sexual abuse.

Houston said in a statement on Sunday that he decided after talking with church leadership and legal counsel.

“The Hillsong Global Board believes that this is in my and the church’s best interests, so I have agreed to step down from all ministry obligations until the end of the year.”

“The court case I’m facing is tied to my father’s situation, and I need to be committed to preparation and involvement with the case, as well as work closely with my lawyers in defending this charge.”

Houston was accused in October of one count of concealing another person’s major indictable offence. After being charged, he first stood down as Hillsong’s board chairman.

The pastor stated in the statement that the claims came as a “shock” to him and that he plans to “vigorously defend” himself.

He stated that his choice to resign was also influenced by his emotional well-being.

“We’ve talked about the emotional impact of my father’s condition, which dates back many years and extends up to the current court issue.”

Frank Houston, Houston’s father, died in 2004 and was accused of sexually abusing a young man in the 1970s. Houston is set to appear in court in Sydney in October.

Aside from the indiscretions of his father, Former Hillsong pastor Brian Houston was recently accused of having ‘indiscretions’ with two women, according to the current head of the worldwide church, who revealed this at a meeting with personnel.

Pastor Phil Dooley, who took over the church’s leadership from Houston in January, informed personnel about the apparent events during a video conference on Friday morning, according to ABC.
