David John Tennant is a Scottish actor. Tennant rose to fame for his role as the tenth incarnation of The Doctor in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who.

Why did David Tennant change his name?

After discovering that there was another David McDonald already represented by the actor’s union Equity, he took his stage name from Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant after reading a copy of Smash Hits magazine.

He later had to legally change his surname to meet Screen Actors Guild rules.

What is David Tennant’s real accent?

We love us some David Tennant. And, we love hearing him speak in his native Scottish accent on-screen, when possible.

David was asked by Russel T Davies because after 9th Davies didn’t want The Doctor to be too regionalized so David Tennant was told not to use his Scottish accent. He instead used the accent he had in Casanova.
