Following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the oldest current Supreme Court justice is Stephen Breyer, who is 82 years old. Breyer was appointed by President Bill Clinton in the 1990s and has been on the bench for nearly 25 years. Breyer served on the First Circuit Court of Appeals before entering the Supreme Court.

Breyer has also served as a Harvard Law School professor, an assistant to the United States Attorney General for Antitrust, and an assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force in 1973.

Breyer has written several books about the American legal system in recent years. His debut book, Active Liberty, was published in 2005. Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s Perspective was published in 2010 and The Court and the World: American Law and the New Global Realities was published in 2015.
