Gregg Charles Popovich was born on January 28, 1949, in East Chicago, Indiana, the United States to parents Raymond Popovich and Katherine Popovich. His father is a Serbian father and his mother is a Croatian.

Gregg Popovich attended Merrillville High School before later graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1970. At the academy, he played basketball for four seasons.

Gregg Popovich graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Soviet Studies and proceeded to go through Air Force intelligence training. Furthering his education, he earned a master’s degree in physical education and sports sciences at the University of Denver.
