A contest was held in 1965 to choose the name of the team, which elicited 19,843 entries and over a thousand different names. The winning name, “Dolphins”, was submitted by 622 entrants.

Joe Robbie, the owner of the team, said he liked Dolphins as the name because as he stated, “The dolphin is one of the fastest and smartest creatures in the sea.”

The team plays its home games at Hard Rock Stadium, located in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida.

The team is currently owned by Stephen M Ross. The Dolphins are the oldest professional sports team in Florida. Of the four AFC East teams, the Dolphins are the only team in the division that was not a charter member of the American Football League (AFL).

The Dolphins were also the first football team in the southeast, along with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Dolphins were founded by attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor-comedian Danny Thomas. They began to play in the AFL in 1966.
