According to regional sources, the Russian military has taken control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power facility, the largest in Europe.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Russian shelling ignited a fire at a building in the factory complex on Friday, which was later extinguished. The blaze alerted world leaders to the possibility of a huge tragedy.

The plant has a total capacity of approximately 6,000 megawatts, which is enough to power almost four million homes.

Residents wearing Ukrainian flags had blocked the road to the plant on Wednesday, in an apparent standoff with Russian forces.

The Ukraine regulatory authority also stated that the incident at the site had not impacted “essential” equipment and that employees were taking precautionary measures. They also stated that there had been “no reported change in radiation levels at the plant.”

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is located on the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine, about 550 kilometres (342 miles) southeast of Kyiv and about 525 kilometres (325 miles) south of Chernobyl, the site of the world’s worst nuclear power plant accident in 1986, which has also been seized by Russian forces.
