Although Russia has just been conducting military operations in Ukraine for a week, the hashtag #IStandWithPutin began trending on Thursday morning, with Africans supporting the Russian president.

But why was this hashtag trending, and why were Africans rallying around it?
According to eagle-eyed tweeps, Russian bots initiated the trend, but soon others jumped on board, either supporting Putin or slamming the invasion.

Those living in Africa took to the social media platform to voice their thoughts on Putin.
Some Twitter users also added an excerpt of a speech by Nelson Mandela.
“If there is a country in the world that has done unimaginable horrors, it is the United States of America.” They have no regard for human beings.
“At a time when Japan was withdrawing on all fronts, they decided to launch an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing a large number of innocent people who are still suffering from the impacts of the bombings.”
Those bombs were not targeted at the Japanese, but towards the Soviet Union, to show, “Look, this is the power we have.” If you dare to oppose what we are doing, this is what will happen to you.
“Because they are so arrogant, they decided to kill innocent people in Japan, who are still suffering from that. Who are they now to pretend that they are policemen of the world?
