While Markus Gisdol, the German coach of Lokomotiv Moscow, stated that he resigned in protest of the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian football club stated on social media that he was fired.

Russian football team coach Markus Gisdol has resigned in protest of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, the Premier League club stated that he had been fired as head coach.
According to the Reuters news agency, Gisdol said in a statement published by the German tabloid Bild that he felt compelled to act after witnessing what is happening in Ukraine.
“I cannot pursue my duty in a country whose leader is responsible for an aggressive war in the heart of Europe,” Gisdol, 52, said.
“That is not consistent with my ideals, thus I have resigned from my role as a coach with immediate effect.”

“I can’t stand on the training pitch in Moscow, train the players, and expect professionalism when directives are issued a few kilometres away that cause immense agony to an entire nation. That is my personal choice, and I feel completely confident in it.”
However, Lokomotiv Moscow announced on social media that the German tactician had been fired. “Markus Gisdol has been fired as FC Lokomotiv’s head coach. The club and team are working as usual and are focused on getting the best possible results in the next matches “
