Doddie Weir is a Scottish former rugby union player who played as a lock, and was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2016.

Weir, 49, started playing rugby for Stewart’s Melville RFC. He went on to play for Melrose in the Borders, winning multiple Scottish championships with the club before joining Newcastle Falcons in 1995.

He won 61 Scottish caps through the 90s, and was selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 1997.

St Andrews Brewing Company has launched a product known as Mistaken Identity that supports the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, rugby legend Doddie Weir’s bid to raise funds to tackle motor neurone disease (MND).

The brewer said that as per its previous rugby release, 38 Year Itch, which celebrated the Scottish Rugby Team’s historic victory at Twickenham, all profits from the sale of the new offering will be donated to the foundation. The company explained that the Mistaken Identity name is a reference to Mr Weir’s defence when he was alleged to have broken curfew on the 1997 Lions Tour to South Africa.

He returned to training with a new bushy hairstyle which he will continue to allow to grow wild in an attempt to raise £4,000 for Acorns.

“I’m growing my hair until 2021 and raising money for Acorns, which is a charity that is close to all of our hearts here at Worcester Warriors,” Weir said.

The number “5” is a special number for the Foundation. It features in the Foundation’s name and is a reference to Doddie’s playing number for his clubs, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and the jersey he wore when he earned his 61 caps for Scotland.

Weir’s foundation has now spent £4m over the last two years – £3.5m on research and £500,000 to help improve people’s lives.
