Praveen Kumar Sobti, best known for playing Bheem in the TV series ‘Mahabharat’ and winning an Asian Games gold medal, died on Monday night after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 74 years old at the time. The actor died in his Ashok Vihar home.

“Sobti had a persistent chest infection. We called the doctor at home late at night when he began to feel uneasy. He died between 10 and 10.30 p.m. as a result of a cardiac arrest “Praveen’s relative told PTI.

Praveen represented the country in hammer and discus throw events, winning four medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals in 1966 and 1970. During the 1966 Commonwealth Games, he also won a silver medal in the hammer throw.

After beginning his acting career as Bheem in BR Chopra’s classic ‘Mahabharat’ in 1988, the athlete gained even more popularity.
