Melvin Ingram III was born on April 26, 1989, in Hamlet, North Carolina, United States. He attended Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Melvin Ingram attended the University of South Carolina, where he played for coach Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 2007 to 2011. He was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection and was recognized as a consensus All-American.

Melvin Ingram was selected by the San Diego Chargers with the 18th overall pick in the 1st round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He later signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on July 20, 2021.
