Caroline Elizabeth Polachek was born on June 20, 1985, in New York, New York, the United States to Elizabeth Allan and James Montel Polachek, a financial markets analyst and trained classical musician.

Caroline Polachek was however raised in Connecticut. Her father died from Covid-19 in 2020. She relocated to Tokyo, Japan with her family and lived there until she was six years old. The family later settled in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Caroline Polachek had begun singing choir in the third grade at Greenwich, Connecticut. Her parents divorced in 1994. She initially studied at the University of Colorado where she co-founded the indie-pop band Chairlift.

Caroline Polachek founded the indie-pop band Chairlift with musician Aaron Pfenning whom she met during her sophomore year. They relocated to New York, where Polachek studied art at New York University and was joined by Patrick Wimberly in early 2007.

Caroline Polachek and the band emerged from the late-2000s Brooklyn music scene with the sleeper hit “Bruises”.
