Daniel Edward Reeves was born on January 19, 1944, in Rome, Georgia, United States. He attended Americus High School, where he participated in football, baseball, and basketball.

Dan Reeves won the MVP trophy at the Georgia High School football All-star game. He was also selected to the All-state basketball team in 1961. He attended the University of South Carolina.

Dan Reeves played college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback from 1962 to 1964. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 1965.

Dan Reeves spent the entirety of his eight-season career with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent 38 years in the NFL and had participated in nine Super Bowls, the third most for an individual.
