Rogel Aguilera Mederos is a truck driver who was facing a 110-year jail term for a deadly crash but had his sentence reduced to 10 years, following a widespread outcry.

The 110-year sentence handed down on Dec. 13 was because of mandatory minimum sentencing laws in Colorado that apply to crimes of violence or any crime that results in death or injury.

The long sentence sparked an international outcry and an online petition campaign that had reached more than 5 million signatures.

Rogel Aguilera-Mederos’ lorry crashed into traffic in 2019, killing four people in the US state of Colorado.

Who are Rogel Aguilera Mederos crash victims?

Rogel Aguilera Mederos lost his brakes while traveling into Denver on Interstate 70 on April 25, 2019.

His truck slammed into stopped traffic and killed four people and injured others. A jury convicted Aguilera-Mederos of 16 first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault charges in October.

The crash killed 24-year-old Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 67-year-old William Bailey, 61-year-old Doyle Harrison, and 69-year-old Stanley Politano.
