The 4-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, quiet, and sometimes gruff, was praised as one of the smartest drivers on the track, owing to his dexterity and mastery in holding what has been thought of as endless reservoirs of patience and savvy sense of discerning when to hold back and when to advance.

Unser was 82 at the time of his demise. Unser’s cause of death was attributed to cancer.

What kind of cancer did Al Unser have?
Unser suffered from hereditary hemochromatosis, which led to a liver cancer diagnosis in 2004. Further complications included a tumor that meant having a tumor and half of his liver removed in 2005. Unser painfully endured cancer for the next 17 years before dying from the disease in his home in Chama, New Mexico.
Cancer is by far one of the leading causes of mortality in America, specifically affecting close to a quarter of a million American citizens annually.
