Valentina Goryacheva, born on December 15, 1935, at Orenburg, was married to Yuri Gagarin from October 1957 to March 1968 when he died.

The widow of the world’s first man in space Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, has died at the age of 84, reports a spokesperson for the Cosmonaut Training Center on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, announced Valentina’s death in a brief statement and offered condolences to her relatives. The statement, however, didn’t initially give further details about the cause of Valentina’s death.
It was later revealed by a source that Gagarina suffered a stroke and fell into a coma more than a month earlier. Despite affectionate visits from relatives and friends of the family, Valentina never recovered from the coma until her heart stopped on the evening of March 17.

Following her husband’s successfully famous pioneering trip to space on April 12, 1961. Valentina accompanied Gargarin at several official events while avoiding the limelight.

Valentina worked as a biochemical expert at the Star City Cosmonaut Training Center outside Moscow, following Gagarin’s 1968 death in an air crash. She avoided the media’s prying eyes but published a book of memoirs about her late husband.
