John Glenn was the third American in space, and the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times in 1962. Following his retirement from NASA, he served from 1974 to 1999 as a Democratic United States Senator from Ohio; in 1998, he flew into space again at age 77.

What did John Glenn say when he stepped on the moon?
In 4 hours 55 minutes on February 20, 1962, John circled the globe three times in his space capsule Friendship 7. The feat was momentous and made Glenn a hero and a household name.
Back when Glenn was struggling to get in politics, a critic taunted him saying, “John Glenn never walked on the moon… All John Glenn ever did was go around the world in a semi-crouch position”. Glenn says now that he might have struck with space flight, all those years ago, if he could have.
