Payal Khanna graduated with a degree in Commerce at Mithibai College, Mumbai. She now owns many restaurants in Bengaluru and Mumbai. She had become involved in designing for the Yash-Raj Studios in Andheri and is now designing cafés. She did an Italian restaurant for Sunil Kapur.

Payal Khanna met Aditya Chopra in Bombay Scottish School when she was still a student. Their mothers were also the best of friends and that smoothen things for the two to eventually become engaged. They got married in 2001 but had a divorce in 2009 after Aditya allegedly had an affair with Bollywood actress, Rani Mukerji.
