808 State was formed in Manchester in 1987. Their name was derived from the Roland TR-808 drum machine. Original members of the band, Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson released their first album in 1988.
The album was a commercial success a year later. This is because one of their songs, Pacific State was played by BBC Radio One. When Gerald left the group in 1989, Andrew Barker and Darren Partington joined the 808 band. They were called the Spinmasters.
