Dame Catherine Tizard was a New Zealand politician who served as Mayor of Auckland City as well as the 16th governor-general of New Zealand.

Dame Catherine Anne Tizard Maclean was the first woman to hold either office. She was born on 4 April 1931 in Auckland to Scottish immigrants, Neil and Helen Maclean.

Dame Catherine Tizard was married to Robert James Tizard, with whom she tied the knot in 1951. The two first met while Bob Tizard was president of the Auckland University Students Association.

Dame Catherine Tizard and Bob ended up with four children including Anne, followed by Linda, Judith and Nigel. They later divorced in 1980. She passed away on 31 October 2021, at the age of 90, following a long illness.

Bob Tizard was a Labour politician from New Zealand and had served as the sixth deputy prime minister, the minister of finance, Minister of Health as well as the Minister of Defence.

Bob Tizard was born Robert James Tizard on 7 June 1924, in Auckland to his parents, Jessie May Tizard Phillips and Henry James Tizard. He schooled at Meadowbank School and Auckland Grammar School and later earned a university scholarship in 1940.

Bob Tizard also studied at Auckland University College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1948 and a Master of Arts in 1950. Bob Tizard died in Auckland on 28 January 2016, at the age of 91.
