Roh Tae-woo was a politician and army officer from South Korea who served as President from 1988 until 1993. He was the Democratic Justice Party’s leader and is credited for adopting the June 29 Declaration in 1987.

Roh was born on August 17, 1932, into a farming family in Tatsuj-gun, Keishhoku-d, near Taiky. When Roh was seven years old, his father, a low-level civil officer in the district, died in a vehicle accident.

Roh enrolled in the Taegu Technical School with the support of his uncle, but then switched to the local Kyongbuk High School, where he excelled. When Roh was in high school in Taiky, he befriended Chun Doo-hwan.
Roh, who served as president of South Korea from 1988 to 1993, died of complications from numerous ailments after his condition deteriorated while battling a degenerative disorder, according to Kim Yon-su, director of Seoul National University Hospital.
