Halas was born into a family of Czech-Bohemian immigrants in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were immigrants from Pilsen, Austria-Hungary, Barbara (Poledna), who managed a grocery store, and Frank Halas, a tailor. George has a varied sporting career.

Halas was hoping to be on the SS Eastland when he worked for Western Electric on a temporary basis in 1915.
