James Joseph Gandolfini was an American actor and producer best known for playing Tony Soprano in the Italian-American criminal leader in HBO’s television series The Sopranos, for which he received three Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and one Golden Globe Award.

Gandolfini was born on September 18, 1961, in Westwood, New Jersey, where he grew up with his parents and two sisters. Santa, his mother, was an Italian-American high school food service worker who was born in the United States and raised in Naples.
