St. Joseph Coach Dick Duval died at 64 on Thursday, August 26, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. His passing comes less than a week after the Hall of Fame coach had the football field named after him.

Thousands of people turned up to the newly named Dick Duval Field last Friday to honor the legendary coach. Originally from Hersher, Dick Duval arrived at SJO in 1988 as a young coach. During the next season, he led the Spartans to the state title game, one of five appearances in the championship.

Duval coached the Spartans for 28 years, going 251-75 in that time. He won five state runner-up trophies and never had a losing record in nearly three decades as a head coach.
Cause of Death
Dick Duval reportedly died as a result of a longtime illness. Sources announced he died following an extended battle with pancreatic cancer.
