Joan Crawford was born Lucille Fay LeSueur on March 23, 1904, in San Antonio, Texas, the USA. She was the youngest child of Thomas E. LeSueur (a construction labourer) and Anna Bell Johnson Cassin.

Joan Crawford is of French, English, Dutch, and Irish ethnicity. She was raised alongside her elder siblings Daisy LeSueur (who died before her birth), and her brother Hal LeSueur. Joan’s father, Thomas LeSueur abandoned the family when she was only 10 months old.
