Henri Van Breda is the second son of businessman Martin Van Breda and Teresa Van Breda, a former IBM computer scientist. He killed his mum, dad and older brother, Rudi with an axe and left his younger sister, Marli in a coma with near-fatal injuries.

On January 2015, the managing director of the Australian branch f Engel and Volger, his wife Teresa and their son, Rudi were found dead in their home, victims of axe attack. Their daughter Marli was in a critical condition having sustained serious head injuries. The youngest son, Henri was slightly injured in the incident with only minor injuries to show.
According to the police when they arrived on the crime scene, Henri was dressed up in a pair of sleep shorts and white socks covered with blood, the DNA matched his parents and brother. The court papers said it is believed the accused tampered with the crime scene, inflicted injuries on himself and gave the police wrong information to mislead the police to the true identity of the murderer.
Sister
Marli Van Breda is the sister of Henri Van Breda. The young girl sustained cut wounds on her head after her brother used an axe on her.

Verdict
On May 21, 2018, the court delivered its verdict through Desai, finding Henri guilty on three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice. He was immediately taken into custody instead of temporary release until sentencing, in the interest of the society, to be transferred to Pollsmoor Prison’s hospital section. He was under treatment for epilepsy and depression following the murders.
Girlfriend
Danielle Janse van Rensburg is the girlfriend of Henri Van Breda. She was at the trial of her boyfriends and stood by him until he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
