Ali Velshi is an American-based Candian Journalist and a businessman who is currently a correspondent at NBC News. He is popularly known for his work on CNN as CNN’s Chief Business Correspondent and anchor for Your Money.

Ali Velshi was born on October 29, 1968, in Nairobi, Kenya, and was raised in Toronto, Ontario after moving there in 1971. He is the son of Murad Velshi who was the first Canadian of Indian descent elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and his wife, Mila Velshi who was a Sout African.
Ali went to Queen’s University and earned a degree in religious studies in 1994. Ali was one of the protests against Preston Manning and Cannada’s Reform Party where he was able to make news by organizing the protest. In 2016, Ali Velshi was honored with an Honorary degree, Doctor of Law (LL.D) from Quen’s University, Ontario.
Ali started his professional career as a General Assignment reporter for CFTO in Toronto and later became a business reporter and anchor for CablePluse 24and its sister station CityTV. He then proceeds to join Report on Business Television in 1999, which is now called BNN Bloomberg- Business News Network. It was Canada’s first all-business news speciality channel.
In September 2001, Ali moved to the United States to join a business news channel CNNfn in New York City where he anchored several shows, including Insights, Business Unusual, Street Sweep, and Your Money. He also co-hosted The Money Gang with Pat Kiernan before the Network ended in December 2004.
Ali was later reassigned to the main CNN’s network and he remained the business anchor and reporter to CNN’s early-morning program, Daybreak. Ali also hosted 13 hour-long episodes of the Turnaround in 2005, a reality television show where he traveled all over America to help small business owners who were facing challenges and seeking help to grow their businesses.
Ali Velshi was assigned to a new TV show called the Situation Room from 2006 to 2006. He then joined American Morning 2005 as a business correspondent and then again as a co-anchor in 2011. However, in 2008, Ali undertook a cross-country road trip aboard the CNN Election Express where he traveled from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Los Angeles, California. During his trip, he stopped on the way to discuss money issues with Americans, and also he spent 10 days riding the CNN Election Express through the rural areas in Texas prior to the March 4, 2008 primaries.
Ali Velshi again appeared on television during the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 where he hosted shows like American Morning and Anderson Cooper 360°. During his shows, he took the viewer’s live calls for them to interact and to allow them to express their concerns.

Ali Velshi’s departure from CNN was announced on April 4, 2013, after he served CNN for about eight years. He then joined Al Jazeera America to host a weekly 30 minutes magazine-style prime-time program called Real Money with Ali Velshi where Ali was recognized as the first on-air personality to host the show. Real Money with Ali Velshi was launched on 20 August 2013 as a daily show after the news network saw massive improvements in Ali’s work and the increase in the audience of his show. The show was later relaunched as Ali Velshi on Target and ended in 2016 when Al Jazeera America shut down in April 2016.
Ali Velshi left Al Jazeera following the shut down of the company to join MSNBC in October 2016, with additional duties at MSNBC’s news divisions, NBC News, where he serves as a Business Correspondent. Velshi is currently working at MSNBC as an anchor for his own show, Velshi which was launched in December 2019.
