Hollywood Actor, Johnny Depp, has lost his High Court libel action against The Sun newspaper over an article which labelled him a ”wife-beater”.
The verdict was delivered today, Monday, November 2,2020. Johnny Depp, sued the Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers (NGN), and the editor, Dan Wootton, over the article they published about him headlined;

The ’Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor sued The Sun over the article that claimed he was violent to ex-wife Amber Heard during their volatile two-year marriage but the court refused to award the Pirates of the Caribbean star compensation for damage to his reputation.

The judge, Judge Andrew Nicol, in delivery the verdict said, ”The claimant [Depp] has not succeeded in his action for libel … The defendants [the Sun and News Group Newspapers] have shown that what they published in the meaning which I have held the words to bear was substantially true.
“I have reached these conclusions having examined in detail the 14 incidents on which the defendants rely as well as the overarching considerations which the claimant submitted I should take into account. In those circumstances, parliament has said that a defendant has a complete defence.”
