The couple’s enduring love story began at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where Robert was majoring in business administration.
They married in 1940 and initially moved to Seattle, Washington, before settling in Syracuse, New York. There, Robert built a successful career in sales and consulting within the industrial chemicals industry.

Ruth often spoke fondly of Robert, referring to him as the love of her life. In an interview with Syracuse.com, she shared a cherished photo of him, saying, “This is the love of my life.”
Their deep bond and shared journey were central themes in Ruth’s 12th book, a memoir titled My Travels through Life, Love and Literacy: A Journey Over 100 Years in the Making.
Robert Colvin passed away in 2014 at the age of 99, after 73 years of marriage. Ruth Colvin lived to be 107, celebrating her 100th birthday in December 2016, and passing away on August 18, 2024.
Together, the couple had two children and left behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service to others.
