Richard Alatorre, a prominent figure in Los Angeles politics, has died at the age of 81, according to city officials.

The details surrounding his death remain unclear, though representatives from City Councilman Kevin de León’s office suggested that Alatorre may have been battling cancer.

The news of his death was announced by Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez.

Born in Texas and raised in East Los Angeles, Alatorre’s foray into politics began as an aide to Assemblyman Walter Karabian before he won his own election to the state Assembly in 1972.

He served in the Assembly until 1985, when he transitioned to the Los Angeles City Council’s 14th District through a special election. His election was a historic moment for the Latino community in Los Angeles, as it marked the return of Latino representation on the council after a 23-year absence.

During his tenure on the City Council, which lasted until 1999, Alatorre held influential positions as chairman of both the Public Safety and Budget and Finance committees.

He also played a pivotal role on the Los Angeles Regional Transportation Commission, the precursor to the current Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).

As the first chairman of the MTA, he was instrumental in the development of the Metro Gold Line and its extension into East Los Angeles.
