Greaves was a key figure in Wanderers’ 1970s team under manager Ian Greaves, making more appearances than any other outfield player in the club’s history.

Born in Farnworth, Greaves played 575 games for Bolton over 15 years, scoring 85 goals. His appearances tally is only surpassed by goalkeeper Eddie Hopkinson.

During his time with Bolton, Greaves helped the team win the Third Division title in 1973 and secure promotion to the top flight by winning the Second Division in 1978.

He played alongside other club legends like Frank Worthington, Peter Reid, Willie Morgan, and Sam Allardyce.

Greaves played his final game for Bolton in February 1980, as the team was relegated to the second tier. He later played for the Seattle Sounders in the North American Soccer League and finished his career with Rochdale in the 1982-83 season.

Bolton Wanderers has announced that tributes will be paid to Greaves, along with former defender Tommy Banks, who passed away in June, during Sunday’s League One game against Wrexham.
