Former Mets player and coach Mike Cubbage dead at 74

Mike Cubbage, former Mets player and coach, passed away on Saturday, August 10 2024 at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer.

Cubbage’s Major League Baseball career began with the Washington Senators, who became the Texas Rangers.

After three seasons with the Rangers, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he played from 1976 to 1980. Cubbage later joined the Mets for the 1981 season, appearing in 67 games.

Transitioning to coaching after his playing days, Cubbage managed various minor league teams before joining the Mets’ major league staff in 1990.

He served as hitting and first base coach and briefly as interim manager in 1991. Cubbage was a consistent figure on the Mets’ coaching staff as their third base coach until 1996.

He concluded his MLB coaching career with the Boston Red Sox, serving as their third base coach in 2002 and 2003, and later worked as a scout for the Tampa Bay Rays and as an assistant with the Washington Nationals during their 2019 World Series run.
