The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirmed that Romania’s Ana Barbosu has been upgraded from fourth to third following a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
CAS upheld an appeal by the Romanian Olympic Committee, ruling that the US team’s inquiry into Chiles’ score was submitted outside the one-minute limit for such appeals and should be disregarded.
As a result, Chiles’ original score of 13.666 has been reinstated, placing her back in fifth place.

USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee expressed their “devastation” at the decision, condemning the “consistent, utterly baseless, and extremely hurtful attacks” directed at Chiles on social media during the appeal process.

Chiles, 23, who had previously won gold in the women’s team event, took to Instagram to share her distress, posting broken heart emojis and announcing her decision to step away from social media for her mental health.
Chiles initially scored 13.666 in the final, putting her in fifth place, while Barbosu scored 13.7. After an inquiry by Chiles’ coach, Cecile Landi, Chiles’ score was temporarily upgraded to 13.766, placing her in third and pushing Barbosu to fourth.
This led to protests from the Romanian team and a statement from Romania’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who labeled the situation “scandalous” and threatened to boycott the closing ceremony.
CAS’s ruling means that Chiles’ score of 13.666 has been reinstated, and FIG has confirmed that the bronze medal will be reallocated to Barbosu.
The International Olympic Committee is coordinating with the US team for the return of the medal and will discuss the reallocation ceremony with the Romanian Olympic Committee.
