Emily Sonnett played youth soccer for the North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA) from 2003 to 2013. During her time with NASA, she achieved significant success, including winning back-to-back Georgia State Cup Championships in 2007 and 2008 and the U-19 national title in 2013 at the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series.

Emily Sonnett was also recognized individually, being named to the U-17 and U-19 Best XI teams and earning the Golden Ball award as the best player at the U-19 tournament.

For her college career, Emily Sonnett attended the University of Virginia, where she played for the Virginia Cavaliers from 2012 to 2015.

Emily Sonnett had a standout collegiate career, earning numerous accolades, including being named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a First-Team NSCAA All-American. In her senior year, Sonnett was named team captain and continued to lead her team to success.
Despite losing in the ACC title and the NCAA tournament quarterfinals, she earned numerous individual accolades, including being a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, awarded to the best college soccer player in the United States. She was also named ESPNW Soccer Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
In 2016, Emily Sonnett was drafted first overall by the Portland Thorns in the NWSL College Draft after completing her degree in sociology.
