Clayton Holmes Grissom, known as Clay Aiken, was born on November 30, 1978, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Faye Aiken Parker and Vernon Grissom. From a young age, Clay was passionate about teaching and working with children. He pursued this interest and studied to become a school teacher.
At around 23 years old, a friend encouraged him to audition for “American Idol.” He was 25 when he released his debut album, which sold over 600,000 copies in its first week and nearly 2.5 million by April 2004.
Aiken was a special education major at UNC-Charlotte. His biological father, Vernon Grissom, passed away on February 27, 2004, and his stepfather, Ray Parker, died on July 4, 2002. Following a suggestion from “American Idol” producers, he shortened his name from Clayton to Clay and adopted his mother’s maiden name, Aiken.
