The 21-year-old Dublin athlete finished in 50.09 seconds, finishing well ahead of US runner Alexis Holmes by 0.26 seconds. Adeleke, who has demonstrated strong form this season, is ranked as the third fastest 400m runner at the Games.

“It was really fun,” Adeleke told BBC Sport. “The track feels really good, and the stands are absolutely packed at this time of day but it’s the Olympic Games – what can you say!”

Sharlene Mawdsley, despite running a personal best of 50.71 seconds, finished fourth in her heat, which was not enough for direct progression to the semi-finals.

Mawdsley was in a challenging heat with gold medal favorite Marileidy Paulinho of the Dominican Republic, who won with a time of 49.42 seconds. Mawdsley will have another chance to advance through the repechage round.
