Gold Medalist Yaroslava Mahuchikh: The Surprising Reason She Wrapped Up in a Sleeping Bag at the Paris Olympics

Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh captured the hearts of fans worldwide with her performance and unique pre-jump routine at the Paris Olympics.

The 22-year-old world champion clinched the gold medal in the women’s high jump event on Sunday at the Stade de France.

Keeping Warm and Focused

One of the most notable aspects of Mahuchikh’s routine was her use of a green sleeping bag between jumps.

The sleeping bag served a practical purpose, helping the young athlete keep her legs warm and active while her rivals took their turns. But it also added an element of surprise and intrigue to her preparation.

“It’s a great way to stay focused and keep my body ready for the next jump,” Mahuchikh explained. ” The sleeping bag helps me maintain my body temperature and stay in the zone mentally.”

Overcoming Adversity

Mahuchikh’s journey to Olympic glory has been anything but easy. In February 2022, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine intensified, she fled her home country, driving through gunfire and shells to reach safety.

Since then, she has trained and lived in various countries, including Portugal, Poland, Germany, Belgium, and Estonia, disrupting her preparation for the Paris Games.

“It’s been a challenging time, but I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from my family, friends, and the global community,” Mahuchikh said. “This gold medal is for Ukraine and all those who have supported me along the way.”

A Historic Moment

Mahuchikh’s victory was made even more special by the success of her rivals, Australians Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson, who won silver and bronze medals respectively.

It marked the first time in Olympic history that two Australian women shared the podium in the high jump event.Olyslagers, known for her own unique pre-jump ritual of writing in a journal, praised Mahuchikh’s performance.

“Yaroslava is an incredible athlete and a true inspiration,” she said. “I’m honored to share the podium with her and Eleanor.”

As Mahuchikh wrapped herself in the Ukrainian flag, draped over her shoulders like a cape, the Stade de France erupted in cheers.
