Personal terms have already been agreed with De Ligt and Mazraoui, who have been offered five-year contracts with an option for another 12 months at Old Trafford.

Both players are represented by the same agent, Rafaela Pimenta, who expressed bemusement over Bayern’s rejection given United’s offer was believed to meet Bayern Munich’s valuation for the out-of-favour pair.

Bayern Munich had informed Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui at the end of last season that they were surplus to requirements and would facilitate moves if credible deals were presented.

Despite Bayern’s stance, United viewed the pursuit of the duo as a market opportunity and found the cost of the deal appealing.

Mazraoui’s proposed move remains contingent on United selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
