U17 Football Star Newton Opoku-Mensah Dies in Drowning Accident

Fortuna Dusseldorf youth team player Newton Opoku-Mensah has tragically died after a drowning accident at Lake Berta in Duisburg.

The 16-year-old rising football star had gone swimming with a friend on Tuesday when the unfortunate incident occurred.

According to reports, Opoku-Mensah dived into the lake and failed to resurface, prompting bystanders to call for help. Rescue teams and volunteers swiftly arrived at the scene to search for the young athlete.

After a frantic effort, Opoku-Mensah was pulled out of the water and resuscitated before being transported to the hospital for further treatment. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Opoku-Mensah succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The tragic news has led Fortuna Dusseldorf to suspend all activities of its youth teams as the club mourns the loss of their promising player.

In a statement, the Bundesliga 2 club expressed their grief: “Fortune mourns U17 player Newton Opoku-Mensah. The young player had an accident while swimming in a lake in Duisburg on Tuesday evening and later died in hospital as a result of the accident. The entire club is shocked and in deep sorrow.

“The training and game operations of all youth teams from U9 to U19 will be suspended until further notice. Also, the reporting on the junior teams will first rest.

“The sympathy of the entire Fortuna family goes out to the relatives, the entire U17 team, and the staff at NLZ. R.I.P. Newton!”

Local police spokeswoman Julia Schindler has stated that an investigation is underway to understand the circumstances leading to the young footballer’s death. “The boy, together with other teenagers, had gone to the Bertasee. We are investigating to reconstruct the circumstances that led to the accident and the tragic epilogue,” Schindler said.

Newton Opoku-Mensah, born in Germany but of Ghanaian descent, was seen as a bright prospect in the world of football.
