In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi detailed the events leading up to Onwenu’s sudden demise. He recounted being present at an event where Onwenu delivered a stirring performance.
“It was a beautiful performance, but little did we know it would be her final bow,” Obi wrote. “Just about a few minutes after her performance, she sat down, drank some water, and immediately collapsed.”
Onwenu was swiftly rushed to the hospital, with Obi and several dignitaries from the event accompanying her.

The scene at the hospital was one of intense urgency, as doctors and medical staff worked relentlessly to save her life. Despite their valiant efforts over more than two hours, the team was unable to prevent her passing.

Obi’s tribute included heartfelt gratitude to those who supported Onwenu in her final moments. “I want to thank everyone who, together with us, accompanied her to the hospital yesterday,” he expressed. “Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, and Mr. Okpara, who were with her during her last moments. Governor Alex Otti joined us also, and Mr. Femi Ajayi who equally returned to the hospital this morning to finalize everything about her passing.”
The former governor offered his condolences to Onwenu’s family, the entertainment industry, and the nation. “May her soul rest in peace and may her legacy continue to inspire and unite us all,” Obi wrote.
He also extended his sympathy to Onwenu’s loved ones and the broader public.
